How to change timezone and weather settings

Thu Jul 16, 2020 4:47 pm

Changing Timezone:

Using Putty (https://www.putty.org/) connect to your movienow. username is pi and password is movienow

To see your current date and time type in date and hit enter, you should see something like:

pi@movienow:/$ date
Thu 16 Jul 12:14:55 EDT 2020

Here are the steps to change the timezone:

1. Delete the current localtime file under /etc/ directory

# cd /etc
# sudo rm localtime

2. All timezones are located under /usr/share/zoneinfo

ls /usr/share/zoneinfo

pi@movienow:/etc$ ls /usr/share/zoneinfo
Africa Brazil Egypt GB Hongkong Jamaica Mexico Poland ROC US
America Canada Eire GB-Eire HST Japan MST Portugal ROK UTC
Antarctica CET EST GMT Iceland Kwajalein MST7MDT posix Singapore WET
Arctic Chile EST5EDT GMT+0 Indian leap-seconds.list Navajo posixrules SystemV W-SU
Asia CST6CDT Etc GMT-0 Iran Libya NZ PRC Turkey zone1970.tab
Atlantic Cuba Europe GMT0 iso3166.tab localtime NZ-CHAT PST8PDT UCT zone.tab
Australia EET Factory Greenwich Israel MET Pacific right Universal Zulu

To find out what timezone names to use

ls /usr/share/zoneinfo/"timezonename"
ex. ls /usr/share/zoneinfo/US

pi@movienow:/$ ls /usr/share/zoneinfo/US
Alaska Arizona Eastern Hawaii Michigan Pacific Samoa
Aleutian Central East-Indiana Indiana-Starke Mountain Pacific-New

3. The below example would change timezone to US, Pacific
# cd /etc
# sudo ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Pacific localtime

note - the timezone name has to match exactly, if pacific was used it would not work.

To save your changes using nano - ctrl X then Y and enter

now when you type in date you should see your edited timezone:
pi@movienow:/etc$ date
Thu 16 Jul 09:18:31 PDT 2020

The time will also change on the Dashboard.

Changing Weather location: (Please keep in mind that darksky is going away soon and should be replaced
with another weather API in the next version?)

This has already been covered but I will include it again so you don't have to hunt for it.

Using Putty connect to your movienow

1. sudo nano /var/www/html/settings/configweather.js

There are three lines to edit:
darkSkyLat
darkSkyLon
darkSkyUnits

To find you Latitude and Longitude search on google for it and put those numbers into the
corresponding lines

For darkSkyUnits use either uk or us

To save your changes using nano - ctrl X then Y and enter

You will have to refresh the Dashboard for the weather changes to show.

Can’t get my date to change. Currently 2 hours out. Tried the above putty method I used;

# cd /etc
# sudo ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/GB localtime

And

# cd /etc
# sudo ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/GMT localtime

No luck. Any ideas ?
